Pay Off Debt Faster

Debt can sometimes seem overwhelming. But you don't have to pay on it forever. You can do some simple things to get your debt paid off quickly.

One of the first things you should do is try to find a credit card with a lower interest rate than the cards you presently have. If you qualify for a lower interest rate card, transfer your balances to that card. That will save you a bundle right off the top.

You can also try to get your present credit card companies to lower your interest rate. It never hurts to ask.

Make bigger monthly payments. If you cannot do this on all your cards, pick the one with the smallest balance and send bigger payments to that one. You'll get it paid off much more quickly, and you can then do the same thing with the next biggest balance.

Consider consolidating your debt. This puts all your bills into one easy monthly payment, and you can have the balance negotiated to as cut as much as 80 percent of what you owe each creditor.

Negotiate your debt

Create a budget and stick to it. You are less likely to wind up short at the end of the month if you stay aware of where you are spending your money and have a plan for emergency expenses.

Get a second job for awhile to help get things paid off faster. Don't use the money from that second job for any other purpose but paying off your debt.

Use coupons for groceries and try to buy when the things you use most often are on sale. It may seem insignificant, but those savings can really add up.

Sell your junk at a yard sale, the flea market, or on eBay. Use that money towards paying off your debts. You will find that no amount is too small because they all add up to get your debts paid off.

Get a home equity line of credit, and use the money to pay off your other debt. While you're paying back your "HELOC," you can deduct the interest from your income taxes, and the interest rate will probably be a lot lower than your credit card interest rate.

Cut out the little expenses, like that expensive morning espresso or lunch at a restaurant. Pack your lunch and drink the coffee you brew at home. Use the money you save to pay towards your debt.

By taking a few little steps, you can get yourself out of debt a lot faster than you may have thought possible.
